A birthday typed at sign-up stays on a Roblox account until someone changes it, and it still decides a fair amount: which games appear, which settings a parent manages, and when those settings pass to the player. Roblox lets you correct it. What has changed is that the birthday is no longer the only age Roblox goes by. Its help centre says that "all chat, Restricted Content, chat without filters with trusted friends, and collaboration using TeamCreate in Studio require age checks", and an age check works from a selfie video or an ID, not from the date you typed. This page sets out each fix and its limits, using Roblox's help centre as read on October 8, 2026, mainly its article on changing your age.
Correct your own birthday
Roblox's instruction is short: "If you made a mistake when signing up, you can correct your birthday in your settings."
- Log in and open Settings: the gear icon at the top right on a computer, or More (the three dots) in the app, then the Settings gear.
- Select the Account Info tab.
- Select the pencil icon next to your birthday.
- Enter the correct date and follow the prompts.
The prompts are where a change can stall. "Depending on the change, you may be required to verify your age using a government-issued ID (for users 13+) or obtain Parental Consent." The article gives one example, an account under 13 being corrected to 19: "you are required to ID verify." It does not list which other changes need an ID or a parent.
There is a floor as well. "You must be at least five years old to create a Roblox account," and the sign-up form offers no birthday younger than five.
Your birthday and your age check are separate
An account now carries two ages: the birthday you typed and the age group an age check places you in. Roblox runs the check in two ways, both covered in Roblox voice chat and age verification:
- Facial age estimation. Persona, a third-party service, "captures a selfie-style video to estimate your age". Roblox says it deletes the images and video after processing and "does not receive or store any biometric data" from the process. The estimate puts you in one of six groups: 5-8, 9-12, 13-15, 16-17, 18-20 or 21+.
- ID verification. A government-issued photo ID, offered only to users 13 and over.
To start either, open Settings, then Account Info, and under Age Group choose Continue with selfie or Continue with ID.
The age group decides the account type and which games it shows. Roblox notes that the ages vary by region.
| Age group | Account type | Games available |
|---|---|---|
| Under 9 | Roblox Kids | Rated Minimal or Mild |
| 9-12 | Roblox Select | Rated Minimal, Mild or Moderate |
| 13-15 | Roblox Select | Rated Minimal, Mild or Moderate |
| 16-17 | Roblox | Everything except Restricted |
| 18+ | Roblox | Full access, Restricted included |
The ratings are explained in Roblox content maturity labels, explained. Roblox's Parental Controls Overview gives two ages for Restricted games: 18+ in its steps and "17+ age-verified" in its list of labels. Its other pages read for this guide say 18+.
A typed birthday only goes part of the way along this table. Because age checks take time, Roblox is running "a transition period in most regions for games access only". During it the typed age still picks the games catalog, with users 5-8 in the Roblox Kids catalog and users 9 and older "having access only to games in the Roblox Select catalog", so an unchecked account with an adult birthday still sees only the Select games. Chat is outside the transition: "We will continue to require age checks to access chat." Unfiltered chat with trusted friends and voice chat wait on an age check too.
A check can also take something away. If facial age estimation places you in the 5-8 or 9-12 group, Roblox says "certain personal data, including your email and phone number, will be removed from Roblox."
When the age check gets it wrong
Roblox's fix depends on the age the account shows:
- The age on the account is 13 or over: in Settings, then Account Info, select Continue with ID to verify your birthday with an ID.
- It is under 13: in the same Account Info tab, use the pencil icon next to your birthday to change it.
- You are under 18 and the estimate came from a selfie: a linked parent can update the birthday instead, once.
- You typed 13 or over and the estimate says under 13: a 48-hour grace period runs before the new age group is final. Selecting Accept Now under Birthday in Account Info ends the wait and gives "immediate access to features".
- The estimate failed: "If we're unable to estimate your age via facial age estimation, you'll need to complete ID verification."
A finished check is not always the last one. Roblox may ask for a new check if it detects a discrepancy with your estimated age, and it says users "may occasionally be prompted to re-check their age" to keep trusted friends and expressive chat.
Verify with an ID
ID verification needs you to be 13 or older and to hold "a driver's license, passport, residency card, or any other government-issued identification document with your picture on it". The steps:
- Open Settings, then the Account Info tab.
- Under your birthday and age group, select Continue with ID, then Continue, and allow camera access.
- Scan the ID. If it has a barcode on the back, capture the back as well.
- Take the photo Roblox asks for. It is used to check that you are the person on the ID.
- Return to your Roblox session, where the status updates live and ends in a pass or a fail. Roblox says this "can take a few minutes".
A pass rewrites the birthday: Roblox "will correct the birthday on your Roblox account with the one you provided on your ID document", and a "Verified" label with a checkmark appears under it. Blurry photos take longer to process, and so can documents from some countries, such as ones with non-Roman characters. Roblox says ID checks work "in over 180 countries" and asks you to use your own document.
Undo an age check that made you an adult
Roblox documents an undo for one case only: "If you made a mistake and your age is checked to an 18+ age group, you can undo your age checked status".
- Open Settings, then the Account Info tab.
- Under your birthday and age group, select Reset.
- Select Continue on the next screen.
The same steps undo a status that came from a selfie estimate or from an ID. Roblox allows it "once per account".
For parents: change a child's birthday
"Parents can manage their child's age through linked accounts", so the first step is a parent account linked to the child's. On the child's account, open Settings, then Parental Controls, and select Add parent. The parent then verifies their own age: Roblox's linking article lists a government-issued ID or a credit card, its Parental Controls FAQ adds facial age estimation, and the FAQ says a parent "must be age checked 18 years of age or older". The full setup is in how to enable parental controls.
Then, signed in to the parent account:
- Open Settings and select the Parental Controls tab.
- If more than one child is linked, select the account to update.
- Select the pencil icon next to the child's avatar.
- Select the arrow next to their birthday to edit it.
"If this arrow is not available, you cannot set your child's birthday." Three limits apply:
- Once only. "Linked parents can only update a child's birthday once."
- Not after an ID check. "If a child has already verified their age using a government ID, the birthday cannot be changed through parental controls."
- Regional rules. "Some regions may have additional legal requirements for age updates."
What a new birthday can change
Roblox says "The age on your child or teen's Roblox account helps us know what content and communication features should be available by default on Roblox", and it moves settings from parent to child at fixed ages:
- 9: games rated Moderate become available.
- 13: the child starts managing their own privacy settings, screen time limits and blocking; after an age check, voice chat and Party chat open up unless a parent restricts them; and "Any spending limits no longer apply." The parent account stays linked. The screen time side of that handover is in how to set Roblox screen time limits.
- 16: the account moves from Roblox Select to the standard Roblox account type.
- 18: "their account is automatically unlinked from their parent."
The Parental Controls FAQ adds that settings update at these ages only "if they and their parents haven't previously made changes to them". Roblox's articles do not say whether a corrected birthday applies these changes at once, but they tie them to the age on the account, so think through a correction that crosses 13 or 18 before saving it. The Roblox safety guide for parents covers the settings worth checking afterwards.
Nobody else can change it for you
Roblox's support team cannot do any of this on your behalf. Its age-check article says support "cannot manually verify IDs, remove existing verifications, or update your account settings", and every route Roblox documents runs through the account's own Settings or a linked parent account. Its account-safety article adds that Roblox employees will never ask for your password, 2-Step Verification codes or backup codes, and that someone who needs that kind of information for a "trick or hack" is "just trying to steal your account". How to secure your Roblox account and common Roblox scams cover the rest.
The typed birthday matters less than it did. For chat and Restricted games Roblox now goes by the age check, and a passed ID check overwrites the birthday anyway. What the birthday still steers, for now, is which catalog of games an unchecked account sees and when settings pass from parent to child. That is the reason to fix it early: a parent's one correction stops working once the child verifies with an ID, so a wrong date is easiest to put right before anyone scans a document.
