How to Change Your Roblox Username (and What It Costs)

Changing your actual username costs Robux every single time. Changing your display name is free and probably the thing you actually want.

Before you spend anything, get one thing straight: Roblox has two names, and most people who want to "change their username" really just want to change their display name, which is free. Renaming the account itself costs Robux and there are reasons to think twice. Here is the difference and how to do each.

Username vs display name

Your username is your unique login handle, the one with an @ in front of it. No two accounts can share it, and it is what you type to sign in.

Your display name is the name people actually see above your avatar and in chat. It does not have to be unique, so two players can both show as "Nova" even with different usernames underneath.

Roblox added display names precisely so you can present a friendlier name without paying to alter your login. If your goal is just looking different to friends, change the display name and keep your Robux.

Change your display name (free)

  1. Open Settings from the gear icon on the website or app.
  2. Go to the Account Info section.
  3. Find the Display Name field and edit it.
  4. Save.

You can do this a limited number of times per week, and the same content rules apply, so nothing offensive or impersonating someone else. It takes effect immediately across games and your profile.

Change your username (costs Robux)

If you genuinely need a new login handle, the username change lives in the same Account Info area, usually behind a small pencil or edit icon next to your username. You will be asked to confirm your password and pay a set Robux fee per change.

The fee is the same each time, and yes, you pay it again for every future rename, so it adds up if you keep flip-flopping. If your balance is short, how to get Robux covers the legit ways to top up, and you can sanity-check what a top-up costs with the Robux calculator at BloxToolbox.

What actually changes (and what does not)

A username change keeps your account intact. Your items, friends, game progress, and Robux balance all stay exactly where they are. Only the handle changes.

A few things worth knowing:

  • Your old username is released. After a waiting period, someone else can claim it, so a rename is not easily reversible without paying again.
  • Friends see the new name. People who knew your old handle may not recognise you, so give them a heads-up. The mechanics of finding people again are in how to add and join friends.
  • Profile links update. Old links pointing to your profile still work because they use your account ID, not the name.

Do not pay anyone else to do it

The only place to change your username is Roblox's own settings. Anyone offering to rename your account, hand you a "rare" username, or sell you an account with a desirable name is either scamming you or pushing you toward something that breaks the rules. Trading or buying accounts violates the Roblox Terms of Use, and we explain the fallout in account trading risks.

Keep your login under your own control by following these account security steps, because a username is only worth protecting if the account behind it is yours and stays yours.

The short version

Want a fresh look? Change the display name, free, done in seconds. Need a new login handle and have the Robux to spare? The username change is quick and safe through Settings, just remember you release the old one and pay again next time. For most players, the free option is the right call.
