Roblox is far better with people you know, and the friends system is how you find each other across thousands of games. Sending a request is easy. The thing that trips people up is joining, because Roblox blocks it in more situations than you might expect, usually on purpose. Here is the whole flow.
Send and accept friend requests
To add someone, open their profile and tap Add Friend. You reach a profile by searching their exact username, tapping their name in a chat or on a leaderboard, or opening it from a game you are both in.
The request sits pending until they accept. To handle requests sent to you, open the Friends section from the main menu, where pending requests show with Accept or Decline buttons. Once accepted, you both appear in each other's friends list and can see when the other is online.
A few practical notes:
- Search uses the exact username, not the display name shown above their avatar. The difference is explained in how to change your Roblox username.
- There is a cap on total friends, so very old accounts sometimes have to remove someone to add a new person.
- Only add people you actually know. Random requests are a common opening move for scammers, covered in common Roblox scams.
Join a friend's game
Once you are friends, joining is simple. Open your friends list, find the person showing as in-game, and tap Join. Roblox drops you into the same server they are in, assuming there is room and the game allows it. You can also join from their profile if they are currently playing.

Why the join button is blocked
This is the part people ask about most. A greyed-out or missing join option usually has a normal cause:
- The server is full. Popular games cap players per server. Wait a moment and try again, or your friend can rejoin a server with space.
- Their join setting is restricted. In privacy settings, players choose who can join them: friends, everyone, or no one. If they picked "no one," even friends cannot follow them in.
- The game blocks following. Some experiences disable mid-game joining so you cannot drop into an active match.
- Different platform or version. Occasionally a game build differs across devices in a way that prevents joining for a short window.
- An age or content limit. A game rated above your account's age cannot be joined, which ties into account age and verification.
If it is a privacy setting, your friend fixes it on their end by allowing friends to join in their account's privacy options. You cannot override it from your side.
Tidy your friends and privacy
